It is believed to be named after Gyorgy Halasz, who played this opening in correspondence chess during the 1980s. Surprisingly, he won almost all the games he played with this opening.

The Halasz Gambit, also known as the Halasz-McDonnell Gambit, is a variation of the Center Game, which arises after the following moves: 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.f4.
