Yesterday I took part in a large trail clean up where several people had been living for years on public land.
After a long and drawn out ordeal to get these squatters moved they have finally either been incarcerated or left. Unfortunately so much damage has been done to the forest with their garbage being tossed in the woods for years to build up. From bottles, cans, cardboard, styrofoam, plastics, discarded furniture, tables, lamps, vacuums, needles, building supplies, electronics, the list goes on.
Many volunteers filled bags after bags of trash, loaded entire travel trailers into dump trailers, hauled up hundreds of lbs of garbage from the side of hills, dump trailer after dump trailer coming and going all day. We finally all headed home around 5pm, dirty, exhausted, hungry but accomplished by what impact we have had thus far. Talked have already begun about another round with more resources and coordination to have an even greater impact!
