(31 Jan 2018) A government shutdown of Kenya's top three TV channels continues pending an investigation, Kenyan officials announced on Wednesday.
Interior Minister Fred Matiangi declared that "the media houses will remain switched off until we have completed some of the investigations" into events related to Tuesday's mock inauguration of Raila Odinga as "the people's president."
Former Kenyan Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, who had been blocked from being sworn in as Odinga's deputy, says his home was attacked overnight in "an assassination attempt."
Henry Maina, regional director of media rights group Article 19, called the shutdown of the TV stations a violation of constitutionally guaranteed media freedoms and the "lowest moment for media freedom in a decade."
Meanwhile, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists called on Kenyan authorities to allow the TV stations to immediately resume broadcasting.
The government also outlawed the opposition's National Resistance Movement, with the interior minister declaring it an organized criminal group.
Membership in such a group can lead to imprisonment up to 10 years under Kenyan law.
