Ando Hiroshige (1797–1858) created the series 'Meisho Edo Hyakkei' shortly before his death. It is regarded as one of his best masterworks. Hundred Famous Views of Edo formed the way how Japanese landscape woodblock prints were seen in Europe, mainly in France, towards the late nineteenth century. The series influenced the French impressionists and post-impressionists. Van Gogh even made copies of some designs or integrated them into a few of his famous paintings.
