This is a quick demonstration by Adreno's two-time Australian Ladies spearfishing champion, Kahlee Andrews, on how to choose the right sized speargun. There is a time and place for every size of gun. Bigger is not always better!
Match the gun to your level of ability and your target fish. If you’re just starting up, don’t get ahead of yourself and buy a 140cm gun suited to fish well beyond your ability. Your best bet would be getting a sub-100cm gun to start off targeting those smaller fish like bream through to kingfish.
Hunting in around reefs where the fish are medium in size and most situations are close range with many obstacles, something around 110cm works well as it gives you good manoeuvrability in the water and enough power to target reef fish.
If you’re more experienced and have moved onto going out on a boat into deeper blue water conditions and you’re targeting those large pelagic fish you’re going to need a gun with some serious power, so anywhere around 130cm/140cm is perfect here.
