From Road Runoff to Biscayne Bay: Miami Needs Bioswales

In this video, we look at how stormwater runoff moves from Miami’s roads, lawns, parking lots, and sidewalks into drains — and eventually toward Biscayne Bay. I compare a regular grass swale with real bioswale examples near Miami International Airport and The Underline / Underrail linear park.

Bioswales may look simple, but they can slow down runoff, filter pollution, reduce flooding pressure, cool urban spaces, and create habitat when planted with the right native plants.

This matters because the recent Biscayne Bay Report Card shows how closely water quality, nutrients, clarity, seagrass, and habitat health are connected to what happens on land. If we want a healthier Bay, we need more living systems between our streets and the water.

Rewilding Miami is not only about big parks or nature preserves. It can start with one swale, one street, one school, one parking lot, one yard, and one native plant at a time.
