Project Description & Objective:
This project explores the changes in perception as typography moves to a screen-based environment, and the relationship formed with imagery in order to bring a narrative to life kinetically. The focus will be on the student’s ability to navigate through a series of ideas in order to allow the story to unfold seamlessly from one moment to the next. Each story should unfold from the introduction, through the body of the narration, and finish with a completely realized conclusion. Good storytelling through typographic expression adds limitations when working with digital media, thus making this a more interesting and ambitious challenge. Although imagery and type can be integrated into the video, the typography should remain the focus of this project.

Students will explore the importance of how motion changes the way designers work with type, and how meaning is affected when used within a digital/kinetic environment. Each student will complete a 1-2-minute video in After Effects, where sound and effects work together to guide the listeners through the desired conclusion. The selection of typography, imagery, and effects needs to work together to illustrate an emotional point of view. The idea of changing a narration from one of just audio to that of visual raises multiple challenges and should be addressed as the project progresses. Each student must focus on how they interpret the narrative, and what place it in a more visual format does in changing the way we think about the story. Hierarchy, placement, flow, and form are still relevant as each frame of the video transitions from one to another. Like unfolding the pages of any story, the designer must remain aware of how information evolves.
