The 1972 BRM P180 was one of the final Formula One designs fielded by British Racing Motors (BRM) during a turbulent period for the team. Designed by Tony Southgate, the P180 was a bold departure from BRM’s previous cars, with an unusually long wheelbase and radiators moved to the rear of the car—an unconventional layout that was intended to improve front-end aerodynamics. While it showed flashes of promise, the car ultimately struggled to deliver consistent results in the fiercely competitive 1972 Formula One season.
At its heart, the P180 was powered by BRM’s own 3.0-liter V12 engine, an evolution of their earlier designs. This naturally aspirated unit produced approximately 450 horsepower at over 11,000 rpm and was known for its high-revving character and distinct wailing exhaust note. While the engine had strong performance potential, it was often plagued by reliability issues and proved difficult to integrate effectively into the P180’s unique chassis layout.
The car’s most radical feature was its placement of the radiators at the rear, which allowed for a clean nose design with minimal obstruction to airflow. However, this came at a cost—cooling efficiency suffered, and the extended bodywork compromised weight distribution and chassis balance. The P180 used an aluminum monocoque and conventional suspension for the era, with double wishbones and coil springs, but struggled to find the optimal setup due to its unusual proportions and rear-heavy configuration.
The P180 made its debut at the 1972 Spanish Grand Prix but failed to achieve significant results. Drivers like Peter Gethin and Howden Ganley piloted the car during its short campaign, but after a series of retirements and uncompetitive performances, BRM returned to running the older P160 chassis by mid-season. The P180 was quietly phased out, marking one of the last attempts by BRM to stay relevant before their eventual decline from the Formula One grid.
The 1972 BRM P180 stands today as a curious footnote in Formula One history—a car that dared to innovate but ultimately fell short of its goals. It reflected both the ambition and the internal struggles of BRM in their final years as a constructor.
