The weekend had come to an end, and the house had grown quiet once again. Fariba’s daughters, who had filled their mother’s home with laughter and lively energy for two whole days, now had to return to their dormitory. Fariba walked them to the door to say goodbye; she already missed them, but she knew their studies and their future were more important than these brief moments of longing. Grandmother, who had watched her granddaughters leave from behind the window, adjusted her scarf and told Fariba it was time to gather the acorns. The season had arrived, and the work could not be postponed. The two of them walked toward the foot of the hill, where the oak trees cast their wide shade and the ripe acorns had fallen to the ground. A gentle breeze blew, carrying the scent of damp earth through the air. Grandmother carefully separated the acorns from the dry leaves, while Fariba slowly filled the sack, her thoughts still drifting to the girls who had just left. When the acorn gathering was finished, Fariba headed toward the field to do another task she had postponed for too long. She began cleaning the land—collecting dry branches, discarded wrappers, bottles, and pieces of plastic one by one. Her trash bin filled up quickly, yet Fariba continued searching every corner to make sure nothing was left behind. Finally, she burned all the waste she had collected in a safe spot so the field would once again be clean and ready.
