At first glance — just bauxite dust.
But if you’ve ever cleaned bulk carrier holds after bauxite, you know:
it’s never “just dust.”
📍 What happened?
Last cargo: BAUXITE.
After discharge, all 5 cargo holds were heavily stained, with paint flakes, loose rust, and residues stuck to bulkheads, hoppers, ladders, and tank tops.
Condition of surfaces: poor — grey/black/white marks everywhere.
⚓️ Vessel: ANNA ELISABETH
Type: Bulk Carrier | IMO: 9407471
Embarkation: Aughinish [IE] | Destination: Santos [BR]
Team: 5 persons
Work process:
— Safety first: equipment checks, high-pressure machines prepared, gas-free spaces
— 27.06: Chemicals applied, full HPM washing of Hold 1
— 28–30.06: Sequential washing of Holds 2–4
— 01.07: Hold 5 washed, completing all cargo spaces
— 02–07.07: Painting of upper areas (8 m) in all holds
— 08–13.07: Final touch-ups, sweeping, tank top washing, removal of residues
— 15.07: Holds inspection passed ✔️
💡 Special note:
Heavy rust and paint flakes required repeated brushing and chemical application.
Painting above 8 m demanded scaffolding and safety harnesses — the most time-consuming part.
👥 Beyond work:
Long days at 08:00–20:00 left the crew exhausted, but in waiting periods (bad weather, anchorage, or “waiting for berth” days), the team shared meals, rested on deck, and spent evenings together.
Because cleaning holds is about endurance — but true strength comes from teamwork, on and off duty.
✅ From stained steel to inspection-ready surfaces — ANNA ELISABETH was restored, hold by hold.
