Forty years ago today, regular proceedings from Parliament were televised for the first time. Cameras were admitted to the Lords chamber to broadcast questions and a debate on the economy on BBC1 and BBC2.
Questions on 23 January 1985 began with members pressing the government on computers in schools.
Today Parliament is broadcast from modern television control rooms near to the Palace. Teams of four manage the broadcasts for each chamber. For the Lords, two camera operators manage five remote controlled cameras that cover all angles of the chamber. A director calls the shots while an engineer is also on hand to make sure everything matches in brightness and colour.
