One of the least-visited locations in Antarctica is also one of its most amazing: The Ross Sea, Earth’s second-largest marine reserve, is an Antarctic extravaganza of otherworldly scenery and exotic polar wildlife – and an absolutely stunning setting for a panoramic helicopter flight.
A natural marvel even by Antarctic standards, the Ross Sea is the location of some of the far south’s most famed expeditions and landscapes. Take for example the Ross Ice Shelf, the largest of its kind, where you can set out on a helicopter ride in the same region Roald Amundson and Nobu Shirase explored in the early years of the 20th century.
You can also visit the Amundsen Sea, where emperor penguins and seals lounge on the ice floes, sometimes accompanied by orcas and minke whales that surface along the ice edge, spouting under the wings of various fulmarine petrels.
Ross Island is another Antarctic favorite. Here you can see Mount Erebus, Mount Terror, and Mount Byrd, as well as many other sites connected with historic British expeditions. At Cape Royds you’ll visit Ernest Shackleton’s cabin, at Cape Evans you may see the cabin of Robert Falcon Scott, and at Cape Adare the hut of Carsten Borchgrevink has been claimed by a colony of Adélie penguins.
And these are just a few of the wonders you can experience in the Ross Sea. There’s also Peter I, one of Earth’s most remote islands, where a soaring helicopter trip can transport you to its glaciated northern coasts. And let’s not forget Renaud Island, where Adélies are also frequently seen.
Depending on which Ross Sea voyage you choose, you might also visit such far-flung sites as the Drygalski Ice Tongue, the adorable Adélie rookeries of Inexpressible Island, and onward through the seabird-rich expanses of the Southern Ocean.
En route to New Zealand proper, you can visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Campbell Island, as rich with colorful vegetation as with albatrosses. Nearby Enderby Island may also grant you great views of other seabirds, including the attractive yellow-eyed penguin.
But whatever voyage you take, even getting to and from the Ross Sea is an epic outdoor experience. Your Drake Passage crossing will afford you cool salt breezes, wide rolling seas, maybe even a fin whale surfacing under a sky flapping with seabirds.
