Al-Rawabi School for Girls (Netflix, Jordan) follows upper-class Ammani teens—but the show’s “villain” isn’t Layan, Mariam, Tasneem, or Sarah. This essay explores how internalized misogyny, honour/shame (“3eib/عيب”), and patriarchy structure the girls’ choices across Season 1 & Season 2. I break down how reputation, social media, and family pressure fuel bullying, victim-blaming, sexual violence, and domestic abuse, and why even the “good” characters end up weaponizing honour.
We’ll talk:
Shame & honour (3eib/ayb) vs. religion; how “reputation” polices girls’ bodies and choices
Internalized misogyny (fake feminism, girl-on-girl policing, weaponized morality)
Cycle of violence (hurt people hurt people—home → school → online)
Jordan/MENA context: class privilege, state/societal pressures, and why these themes resonate beyond the Arab world (South Asia, Latin America, etc.)
