VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Decreasing kids’ pain can help improve the overall hospital experience and has been shown to positively benefit recovery too. As a part of the Comfort Promise at SickKids, toddlers will be offered the following three techniques to help reduce needle poke pain.
Numbing cream. Numbing cream helps to reduce needle poke pain by numbing the area that the cream is applied to. This cream will be placed on the child's skin before the needle poke by their healthcare provider. Numbing cream needs at least 30 minutes to work and can stay on the skin for up to two hours. Please speak to your health care team if you want to buy numbing cream before your appointment.
Comfort positioning. Being in a comfortable position can help kids of all ages relax and stay still during a painful procedure. To minimize a child's anxiety, avoid laying them flat. Toddlers feel more in control when they are able to sit up. Ask your child if they would like to sit on your lap during the procedure. If your toddler is getting an injection holding them chest-to-chest, like a hug, works best. Or have them sit in between your legs. For lab draws and IVs having them sit up with their back against yours is best.
Distraction. Distraction is helpful for all ages to reduce pain. Distraction shifts our child's focus from the needle to something more soothing. Bubbles, stories, or videos are great ways to help distract toddlers.
The healthcare team at SickKids will offer these techniques to all patients. Parents, you know your child best. Discuss with your health care team to learn more and develop a Comfort Promise plan for your child.
