In this episode, I look into how this Gucci “world” came to be, analyzing the house’s central codes and taking a peek inside the minds of its creators.

After detailing Gucci’s 20th-century history—which began in Italy with Guccio Gucci in 1921, and was later revived by Tom Ford in the 1990s—I delve into the vast influence of Alessandro Michele, who currently serves as Gucci’s creative director. Michele has been nothing short of revolutionary for the brand: His designs question and undermine traditional ideas of beauty, gender, and aesthetic cohesion in ways that are eccentric and provocative, yet still digestible and in line with the house’s longstanding codes. In the video, I detail two of Michele’s experimental projects: the Gucci Garden, a museum-store in Florence, and the Gucci Vault, an online version of the Garden.

Ultimately, for me, Gucci is the brand it is today because it avoids pretense and is unabashedly itself. First and foremost, Gucci is about loving fashion—embracing beauty in different forms, wearing what you love, and making it your own. That spirit is, I believe, what will keep it forever young.
