Описание: 1: Difference between Nuclear Powered and Diesel electric AIP submarines.
1st a diesel electric submarine cost 200 $ Million to 600 $ Million. You can buy 3-4 AIP subs for 1 nuclear Attack or SSN.
Nuclear powered Submarines have edge in endurance & Speed and probably Stealth over AIP subs
But Newer AIP equipped are closing this Gap and costs only a fraction of cost of Nuclear Powered
A diesel engine generates electricity to drive propeller and power its systems.
But there is a problem, Diesel engine create noise and it runs on air.
air is limited when submarine is under water. Thus, sub has to surface frequently
1st Nuclear powered submarines were brought in to service in 1950s.
Nuclear Reactors are quieter, do not consume air, and produce enormous power.
That allows nuclear submarines to remain submerged for months while traveling at higher speed
That’s why America has all Nuclear-powered submarines, but other countries operate diesel electric submarines because of lower cost and less complexity.
in 1990s submarines powered by Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology entered operational use.
Sweden made its 60-meter-long Gotland-Class with AIP, it was stealthy & had long endurance
today there are 60 AIP submarines operating 15 countries & 50 more on order.
China has 15 Yuan-class Type 039A submarines with 20 more planned. 8 for Pakistan Navy.
China`s Type-032 is world`s Largest Conventional Submarine with 6,628 tonnes displacement
Type-032 has 2 SLBM VLS and 4 Cruise missile VLS. That Pakistan should have bought.
Japan has 8 Soryu class submarines and 15 on order. Sweden has 4 types of types of AIP subs
Germany has Type 212 and 214, and has exported them across the globe.
 fuel-cell powered submarines include Spain ( S-80), India ( Kalvari-class) & Russia ( Lada-class)
3 upgraded Agosta-90b class subs with MESMA engines serve in the Pakistani Navy.
Nuclear vs. AIP: Who Wins?
Nuclear Powered subs r quiet. 2009 French & English subs collide as they didn’t hear each other
Diesel powered subs are quieter as run on batteries for some time but AIP elongate that time
on more than 1 occasion diesel subs have slipped passed air craft carrier defences in war games
For endurance, it’s a win for Nuclear powered submarines. But AIP subs like Type-214 can remain under water for some say 2 months.
countries like Japan, Germany and China that mostly operate close to friendly shores, extreme endurance may be a lower priority.
For Speed, Nuclear powered subs can attain 35 knots and Conventional subs like type-214 23 kn
nuclear submarines rarely operate at maximum speed because of the additional noise produced
US Virginia class costs $ 2.6 Billion. And AIP subs costs only $ 200-600 Million.
Crew, AIP sub has crew of 30-60 and Nuclear powered sub has crew of 100 or more.
also have heavier armament, such as Vertical Launch Systems, when compared to most AIP
a torpedo or missile from a small submarine can hit just as hard as one fired from a large one
and if you have more submarines in area then chances are that you will achieve your targets.
navies that operate largely around coastal waters are turning to cheap AIP submarines
