Higher Education is a sub-system within the education system in our country. It plays an integral role in national development, by enriching the human potential thereby empowering the nation. The objectives of the national education system are the attainment of competency, desirable attitude, and appropriate skills for the majority of citizens. These in turn will ensure the establishment of a viable socio-economic base for inclusive advancement in the quickly progressing world. In spite of these national objectives, a large number of people in the country are unable to reach the pinnacles of Higher Education and enjoy its benefits. Hence, the issue of excellence and efficiency assumes great importance in Higher Education to ensure that its benefits percolate to the grass root level. Excellence in education is a context-bound concept. Efficiency has been perceived and measured by different yardsticks. The efficiency of learning depends on the efficiency of the institutions of Higher Education. Excellence and efficiency are interlinked and go hand-in-hand to the extent that one affects the other, in its positivity and negativity. In the present education system, there are numerous challenges that impede the progress for excellence. We need to take up these challenges in our stride and march forward undeterred. H L College of Commerce and A G Teachers College have collaborated to provide a forum for discussion and active exchange of ideas through this national conference that would benefit teacher educators, researchers, policy-makers, students and all like-minded people aspiring to uphold the prestige of Indian Higher Education system and to set new benchmarks as per the international standards.
