With apocalyptic numbers of people facing no power, India is entering its second day of blackouts because of a collapse of 3 major power grids in the country. Some 670 million people, more than one half the entire population of India, are without power.

While electricity is slowly being restored to various areas, the same thing happened 2 days ago and ended up doubling in size today. Upwards of 330 million people were without power on Sunday and as power was being restored to the grid that collapsed, 2 other grids suffered the same fate, plunging a population nearly twice the size of the entire continent of North America into darkness and an erie silence minus the hum of electric motors and buzzing wires.

Much of India's population, about one quarter, goes about their lives in extreme poverty and is not used to even as much as a single light bulb in their homes, so a catastrophe this size is of little importance to them. But, to a country trying to modernize and create a bustling economy, an infrastructure shortfall of this magnitude is devastating to those that depend on electricity.

The trust in a society and the will to participate and make things better are essential to making that society work and for many, this power outage, one of the worst in history, could have a huge impact on the economy of India. With miners trapped, train commuters stranded and hospitals plunged into darkness, some investors could be wary of putting their money into a nation who's infrastructure is not up to modern standards.

Conversely though, companies that build power plants and those that provide the equipment for them and the power grid may see a new opportunity here.
