The last week of April has been arrival time for bluefish in recent years and this season is no different. Blues swept onto the Long Island scene this past weekend and were firmly established by Monday and Tuesday along the South Shore. Surfcasters in Fire Island Inlet and Moriches hammered choppers into the mid-teens, with some fish pushing 16 and even 18 pounds.
Striper action has spread the length of the Island with the bigger fish still solidly entrenched on the west end, particularly in Raritan Bay and to a lesser degree in Jamaica Bay. Several locations are yielding limit catches of flounder for those who work at it, and sinker bouncers are looking forward to Monday’s opening of porgy season. Most of that effort will be directed at Peconic and Gardiners bays.
