My Interview
The resignation of Mr. Farouk Ahmed from his position as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), following the allegations involving Dangote, is not sufficient.
Resignation alone does not amount to accountability. If the allegations are credible, Mr. Ahmed must be thoroughly and transparently investigated. Where evidence establishes wrongdoing, he should be prosecuted in accordance with the law and, if found guilty, sanctioned appropriately.
This is why laws exist—not merely to encourage voluntary exits from office, but to enforce accountability, deter abuse of power, and uphold public trust in regulatory institutions. Anything short of due process and justice sends a dangerous signal that public officials can evade responsibility by simply stepping aside.
