Keynote by Anna Vilanova from TU Eindhoven at the Visual Computing Trends 2025 symposium in Vienna on January 30, 2025: "Bursting the Black Box".
Machine learning has successfully developed models that outperform humans in several tasks. This success is, however, limited in its deployment in sensitive applications, often attributed to the black-box nature of most successful models. Explainable AI (XAI) emerged as a field to address this problem, driven by the fundamental need for transparency, human interpretability, and understanding. Extensive and diverse research across multiple disciplines has been developed in relation to XAI. Each has its own perspective on what it means to 'open the black box’. In this talk, I will present my view on embedding the human in the loop in the machine learning context in aspects related to XAI, and the potential role and challenges for visual analytics. Visual Analytics wants to foster the strengths of humans and computers effectively being a seamless match for XAI. I will illustrate my perspective on the need for visual analytics research, along with the challenges it faces in fulfilling the promise of XAI, using examples from our group’s work.
