They need progressive overload, adequate volume, sufficient protein, and effort close to failure.
Just like men.
A recent Bayesian meta-analysis (40028215) found that when you account for starting lean mass, women gain muscle and strength at similar relative rates as men. In other words, pound for pound, women respond to resistance training just as well.
The physiology supports this:
• Muscle protein synthesis increases similarly after resistance training
• Type I and II fibers hypertrophy in both sexes
• Relative strength gains are comparable
The idea that women need “toning workouts,” pink dumbbells, or special “female-specific fat-burn programs” isn’t science, it’s BS marketing.
And often it’s marketing that charges women more for the exact same programs, products, and principles
That’s the pink tax in fitness.
Are women small men? Of course not. Hormonal profiles differ. Absolute muscle mass differs. But the fundamental mechanisms of hypertrophy: mechanical tension, progressive overload, proximity to failure, are the same.
Train hard.
Lift progressively heavier.
Do enough volume.
Eat enough protein.
Recover.
