This week, Angola’s capital Luanda has erupted into violent unrest as thousands protest the government's decision to cut fuel subsidies. The move caused diesel prices to surge by over 30%, leading to a spike in transport and food costs in a country where most citizens earn less than $75 a month.
The unrest began on Monday, July 28, 2025, when minibus taxi drivers went on strike, crippling public transport. By nightfall, peaceful demonstrations turned violent — with looting, roadblocks, and clashes between protesters and police. At least four people have died, including one police officer, and over 500 have been arrested. The protests have since spread to other cities, including Huambo.
President João Lourenço says the subsidy cuts are necessary to stabilize public finances, but critics argue that the government is ignoring Angola’s worsening poverty and inflation.
