Many Americans do not know that members of five Southeastern tribes––the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Muscogee and Seminole Nations––enslaved Black people to build plantation wealth, just like the early European American colonizers.
In collaboration with the Indigenous American Culture Student Association (IACSA) and the Asian and Native American Center, the Bolinga Black Cultural Resources Center hosted Eli Grayson, a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, who spoke about the histories of those enslaved by the Five Tribes, their relationships to the tribal nations following the Civil War, and the ongoing legacies of the Freedmen and their descendants.
