Till You Looked Up:
Till You Looked up, the sunshine in your hair,
I never knew the world could be so fair,
I never knew the sky could be so blue,
The day so glad, and gold because of you.
Till you looked up, before our sad goodbyes,
A strange sweet light within your tender eyes
I never knew the woodbird's song of June
Bore such a wondrous meaning in its tune.
Till you looked down, and thro the pensive night
Pass'd from my heart, and slowly out of sight,
I never knew that grief could be so great,
And now I can but weep, and watch, and wait!
(Julian Gade)
Love's Words:
O, my beloved, very gently tread
Tread softly for the sleeping garden's sake
Lest any rose should wake,
Uplifting from her leaves a dewy head,
I would not that the smallest rose should hear
The words that are for my beloved's ear.
O, my beloved, from those happy skies,
The moon and all her stars keep watch indeed.
Yet wherefore should we heed
The quiet laughter in their twinkling eyes
We know the nearest star could never hear
The words that are for my beloved's ear.
(Helen Lanyon)
Were I With You:
Were I with you in some enchanted place,
I should forget my sorrow for a space,
Reading of hope and joy within your face,
Were I with you, with you.
Were I with you in some sad lonely land
I should not fear beneath dark skies to stand,
But bravely journey, holding fast your hand,
Were I with you!
And if the fleeting years had passed away,
And for the great unknown
I waiting lay,
I should not fear to face the rising day
Were I with you, with you.
(Edward Lockton)
I Hid My Love
I hid my love in the heart of a rose,
All day to your happy throat twas pressed,
From dewy morn till twilight close,
And you never guessed!
I hid my love in the lilt of a song,
You caught the melody rippling through,
It came to your lips the whole day long,
Yet you never knew!
I hid my love in the depths of my heart,
The heart that I deemed could hold it fast,
But it broke its bonds when we came to part,
And you knew at last!
(Clifton Bingham)
Two Days:
The day I saw you first, beloved,
A bird upon the briar rose
Kept measure with my singing heart.
And, as the kingdom true love knows I entered in and took my part,
He sang as sang the bird that waked,
The morning first in Eden close,
The day I saw you first beloved.
The day you went away, Beloved, the chariot of the sun was late,
The air was full of rain and mist.
And all the hours you made me wait
Before you kept the parting tryst
The skies wept as the angel wept,
The skies wept as the angel wept who held the sword at Eden gate.
The day you went away, beloved.
(Ethel Clifford)
Born Helen Guy, at Château d'Hardelot, Helen Rhodes had an English father and a French mother. She taught singing and was good friends with many singers including the wonderful Emma Calve, which you can certainly hear by how "singery" these songs are. All of these songs were written after "Because", except for "I Hid My Love" which was written in the same year, 1902.
