The demand by the Southern Governors’ Forum for the next president of Nigeria in 2023 to come from the southern section of the country was bolstered on Tuesday by Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State and the Middle Belt Form which both backed the governors.
However, the Arewa Consultative Forum and a fringe Coalition of Northern Groups have kicked against the demand, accusing the southern governors of ganging up against the north to force a regional shift of the presidency by whatever means necessary.
Hon Mark Terseer Gbillah, the lawmaker representing the Gwer-East/Gwer-West Federal Constituency of Benue State in the House of Representatives, discusses the positions taken by both sides of the divide and the deepening fault line between northern and southern Nigeria.
