This track is a 2025 surf-rock reimagining of a song I originally wrote back in 2010 about the body scanners airports were rolling out across the country. The original theme was about privacy, freedom, and pushing back against creeping surveillance.
This updated version dives into the strange days of 2020, when Gavin Newsom ordered beach shutdowns and stand-downs across California during COVID — surfers getting chased off empty beaches, mask patrols, and social distancing tape stretching across the sand. The message is the same: stay awake, stay aware, don’t lose your freedom, and make yourself a vow.
Musically, this mix blends a Bo Diddley tribal beat, sun-bleached surf guitars, and a dense Wall-of-Sound production style. Male upper-register vocals, stacked harmonies, maracas, toms, 12-string shimmer, walking bass, glockenspiel sparkle, and tape-echo atmosphere all give it a retro-modern punch — like a lost 4-track surf cut from a parallel ’60s.
If you’re into vintage surf energy, Diddley rhythms, jangly guitars, or big analog textures, you’ll feel right at home.
