Описание: আরাল সাগরের জলরাশি কাজাখস্তান, উজবেকিস্তান এবং মধ্য এশিয়ায় বিস্তৃত ছিলো। ৬৭ হাজার বর্গ কি.মি. আয়তনের হ্রদটি ১৯৯৬ সালের হিসাব অনুযায়ী প্রায় ৭০% শুকিয়ে গেছে। মধ্য এশিয়ার দেশগুলোর অর্থনীতির সাথে ওতপ্রোতভাবে জড়িত ছিলো আরাল সাগর। সাগরটি শুকিয়ে যাওয়ায় সেখানকার ভূ অর্থনীতি মারাত্মকভাবে ব্যাহত হয়েছে। আরাল সাগর তীরবর্তী এলাকার আবহাওয়া মোটেও বসবাসের জন্য উপযুক্ত ছিল না। বার্ষিক বৃষ্টিপাতের পরিমাণ মাত্র ১০০ মিলিমিটার, যা যেকোনো প্রাণীর বসবাসের জন্য প্রতিকূল। প্রতি লিটার পানিতে লবণের পরিমাণ ছিল গড়ে ১০ গ্রাম করে। হাতেগোনা কয়েক প্রজাতির সামুদ্রিক মাছ বেঁচে থাকতো সেখানে। এদেরকে ঘিরে আরালের বুকে গড়ে উঠে ক্ষুদ্র মৎস্যশিল্প।
