People with IBD often report poor quality sleep, which can have knock on effects to other areas of their life, and ultimately make life harder to deal with. Some research now suggests that problems sleeping might not just be a result of IBD symptoms, but also contribute to future IBD symptom flare-ups, and increased mental health difficulties. We think that improving sleep is helpful in its own right, and will likely lead to better quality of life on its own. However, improving sleep in people with IBD might also have knock-on benefits to other areas of life, including helping with IBD symptoms, mental health, coping with life’s daily stressors, and dealing with pain. One effective way to improve sleep is to use a type of therapy called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi). However, CBTi has not been tested with people with IBD, and will likely need to be changed and adapted to the needs of people with IBD. The research proposed here has two main aims. Firstly, we want to co-produce a CBTi intervention with the needs of people with IBD at the centre of its design. Secondly, having developed an intervention that is tailored to the needs of people with IBD, we want to pilot test the final product to make sure its fit for purpose.
