STORYLINE:
Top government officials unveiled a multi-billion (US) dollar, glittering steel and glass new airport terminal in the Indian capital on Saturday, months ahead of playing host to the Commonwealth Games.
The state-of-the-art new terminal at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, called Terminal 3 or T3, was built in just 37 months at a cost of nearly three (b) billion US dollars and will be ready for passengers on July 16.
New Delhi is slated to host the Commonwealth Games that feature 71 nations and territories of the old British empire from October 3-14.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, accompanied by United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi, as well as a host of officials, inaugurated the new terminal.
The new structure is spread over 2.5 miles (4 kilometres) and with 168 check-in windows, it can handle 34 (m) million passengers a year, according to Delhi International Airport (P) LTD (DIAL), the consortium that built and operates the airport terminal.
It also has 78 aerobridges, the largest number in an airport terminal, according to DIAL.
The new terminal has also incorporated several environment-friendly features.
Delhi International Airport (P) LTD is a joint venture between Indian infrastructure company GMR group, Germany's Fraport, the government-run Airports Authority of India and Malaysian Airport Holdings.
As India's economy grows it is faced with the task of upgrading its often dilapidated infrastructure, including roads and airports.
A similar modern terminal is planned for India's financial capital of Mumbai as well.
