Scrambling up to the rock above Tai Tan feels less like a hike and more like solving a vertical puzzle. Hidden off the main coastal trail, the route starts innocently enough along village paths and sandy coves before dissolving into faint ribbons of dirt threading through shoulder‑high grass. The “trail” is really a series of goat tracks, each tempting you in the wrong direction, so every turn costs energy and confidence.
As you gain height, the slope steepens into loose, sun‑baked gravel and jagged granite. Hands go down, camera goes into the bag, and progress slows to a crawl as you pull on roots and edge around exposed slabs. The air is still, broken only by the sea thundering below and the clack of stones sliding away underfoot. Reaching the rock itself—perched above the Tai Tan coastline—feels unreal: a tiny, wind‑blasted platform with endless blue on three sides and no easy way home
