Orchi is an adult female Grey-Headed Flying-Fox who was noticed in a poorly netted backyard fig tree.
Orchi is in care, but I don't know how she's going to go. I haven't heard how she is today yet.
Netting entanglements are the bane of my summers, especially in years of reduced batty food around town. It's a relatively quiet season this year with only a few rescues daily. Some seasons there are up to 35 rescues done daily by the Sydney bat rescuers. As you can imagine, this is a nightmare of logistics, and then a nightmare as carers are inundated with many extra animals requiring specific nursing and vet care.
The really bad netting is mostly phased out, and no longer being imported or sold in the large hardware chain stores, but since it's not yet illegal to sell or use, there are still small local stores and garden centres selling the horrible stuff, and many gardeners still have stores in their garden sheds.

36 hours after rescue I have just found out that Orchi died late this afternoon.
RIP Orchi
I named her for the street in which I rescued her, Orchard Rd. When I was a child, the first packaged fruit juice which came onto the market was called Orchy Orange. When I was a kid, we didn't ever buy fruit juice or soft drinks - but one day I went to my dad's work to help him reorganise his office, and he bought me Orchy Orange for lunch, which was packaged in a waxed cardboard triangular pyramid shape container.
I always remember this because juice was such a treat. Juice and soft drinks - birthday treats.
