I think it's something to do with the food, frankly. It could be the cold, but it is absolutely true that Germanic folklore is terrifying. It's filled with adults eating children. It's filled with famine, it's filled with nightmare. It's filled with murder and awful things happening.
People like horror stories sometimes, because it actually makes them feel better.
