As someone who was 20/21 in 2016 I don't think enough was even that different to be nostalgic about and the things people are romanticising like Snapchat Dog Ears and fidget spinners shows how culturally bankrupt this time was. The nostalgia is purely driven by people wishing they were younger rather than anything tangible.
