In a first of its kind in the state, the Kochi City Police in Kerala have registered a case of cinema review bombing against YouTubers and vloggers. The police also name YouTube and Facebook as accused in the case.
The legal action comes after the Kerala High Court ordered the state police to take action against those who put up malicious review practices, with the objective to blackmail filmmakers.
According to the reports, the FIR lists as accused Snake Plant cinema promotion company owner Hains, anoopanu6165 Facebook account holder, YouTubers Arun Tharanga, NV Focus, Trend Sector 24x7 and Aswanth Kok, along with social media account Travelling Soulmates.
The FIR was based on a complaint filed by Ubaini E, the director of the film ‘Rahel Makan Kora’. The case has been registered under IPC section 385, for putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion and section 34 for common intention and the Kerala Police Act section 120 for causing, through any means of communication, a nuisance of himself to any person by repeated or undesirable or anonymous call, letter, writing, message, e-mail or through a messenger.
‘Rahel Makan Kora’ which features Anson Paul and Merin Philip in key roles, released on October 13. The case registered by the director marks a significant step in addressing the issue of review bombing in the Malayalam cinema industry.
The Kerala High Court ruling came for a petition filed by Mubeen Rauf, the director of the film "Aromalinte Adyathe Pranayam." Through his petition, Rauf wanted to highlight the bad impact of vloggers' "foul play" on the film industry. Rauf wanted appropriate action be taken to curb these malicious practices involving purposefully degrading a newly released film.
The Kerala High Court issued a notice to the Union ministry of information and broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification on a petition seeking to establish guidelines for online film critics.
