These signs mean it’s time to seek urgent medical attention. Don’t second-guess yourself. ❤️
️⃣ Abnormal Breathing – Breathing fast, nostrils flaring, head bobbing, ribs or tummy sucking in, or weird sounds like wheezing/stridor? Not normal. Watch for signs of struggle – these are red flags.
️⃣ Not Feeding Properly – Refusing feeds, dropping off suddenly, or just not interested in milk? Babies get dehydrated quickly. Don’t wait.
️⃣ Less Urine / Fewer Wet Nappies – If your child hasn’t weed in 6+ hours while unwell, they may be dehydrated. You don’t need a degree to know that’s bad.
️⃣ Hard to Wake / Unsettled – Lethargic? Floppy? Weak or high-pitched crying? Can’t be consoled? Not just “overtired.” Trust what you’re seeing.
️⃣ Fever + Rash (esp. Non-blanching) – Press the rash. If it doesn’t fade, it’s a non-blanching rash – a possible medical emergency. Even with other rash types, fever + rash = doctor time.
️⃣ Baby Under 3 Months + Fever over 38°C – No "wait and see." Any fever over 38°C in a baby this young = straight to hospital, even if they seem fine otherwise.
️⃣ Unusual Skin Colour – Blue lips/nails/torso = emergency. Grey, pale, or mottled skin can also signal serious illness – especially if it’s not normal for your child.
️⃣ Your Gut Instinct – If your gut is screaming something’s wrong, LISTEN. You know your child. If they’re “not themselves,” don’t hesitate. Go get help.
🩺 You are the expert in your child. These red flags aren’t for scaring you — they’re here to empower you.
