DESCRIPTION
This episode concludes the turbulent era of the judges by recounting two linked stories from the final chapters of Judges. The first follows Micah of the hill country of Ephraim: stolen and returned silver is fashioned into an image, an ephod, and household gods, and a Levite from Bethlehem becomes a paid priest for a private shrine. When men of the tribe of Dan pass through, they steal Micah’s idols and recruit the Levite to serve them, establishing idolatry in the city they conquer.
The second, darker account centers on a Levite and his concubine who travel to Gibeah in Benjamin. After being taken in by an old man, the house is besieged by wicked men of the city. The concubine is handed over, brutally raped through the night, and dies. The Levite dismembers her body and sends the parts throughout Israel, provoking a national outrage and a grim assembly at Mizpah.
The ensuing conflict becomes a civil war. Israel mobilizes against Benjamin, suffers heavy losses in two battles, and finally wins with a strategic ambush. The Benjamite towns are destroyed, and only six hundred men survive. To preserve the tribe, Israel massacres Jabesh Gilead and seizes four hundred virgin women, then arranges further abductions at Shiloh so the Benjamites can repopulate—violence layered upon violence.
Throughout these narratives the repeated refrain rings out: "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did what was right in his own eyes." The stories show religious corruption, moral collapse, and civil disintegration when tribal Israel lacks unified, righteous leadership. The episode closes by pointing toward the next books—Ruth and Samuel—where the need for a king and the line of David begin to take shape.
Highlights:
Micah’s private shrine and a Levite for hire show religious corruption in Israel.
The massacre at Gibeah leads to civil war, near annihilation of Benjamin, and desperate measures to preserve the tribe.
The recurring refrain underscores the book’s argument: Israel’s need for a righteous, unifying king.
