Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2020 Chevrolet Bolt, we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the EcoHitch trailer hitch receiver. While these compact vehicles do have a lot of upsides, providing us with excellent fuel savings and things like that, the downside is we don't have a ton of space on the inside. So if you're looking to carry around some things, maybe some bicycles, you're really gonna be limited on what you can keep inside. So by adding a hitch back here, that's really going to allow us to use different types of accessories and open up our options on what we can carry around. So probably my favorite thing about this hitch is the fact that it gives us that 2" by 2" receiver tube opening.
That's not something you see readily available for smaller cars like this. A lotta times your only option is that smaller 1 1/4" by 1 1/4" hitch. So by having this larger opening that really allows us to use pretty much any type accessory that we want, and it doesn't look out of place on the back of the Bolt, either. For the most part, it's gonna be completely hidden, so most of the hitch is behind our bumper beam, so really the only thing you're gonna see here is a receiver tube opening. And a lotta times, having a 2" hitch on this smaller car can really kinda stick out like a sore thumb, and that's just not the case at all with this one.
Many of our Bolt customers plan on using their hitch primarily for those type of accessories. And a lotta those accessories can actually be stored in an upright position, so you can kinda flip 'em up. And what works out well with this setup here is that the hitch is gonna give us some pretty good bumper clearance. So what I mean by that is the end of the receiver tube opening is gonna kind of be just behind our bumper a little bit, so really shouldn't give us any issues at all. If we do have those folding accessories, that way when we store 'em in the at upright position, it shouldn't make contact with the back of our Chevy.
So the hitch is gonna have a reinforced collar, not only for extra strength, but I think it actually looks pretty good, too. It is gonna have that standard 5/8 pinhole. Now keep in mind, it does not come included with the pin and clip, but if you need one, you can grab it right here at etrailer. The safety chain openings are plate style, and they're relatively small, but they still give us enough room to use pretty much any size hook that we might have. As far as the hitch's weight capacities go, it's gonna have a 300-pound maximum gross tongue weight rating.
So that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pushing down on the hitch. That's a decent number, and you should be able to use those two and three bike racks, maybe even a four bike rack, depending on the weight of all your bikes and the rack itself. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's going to be 2,000 pounds, and that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pulling on the hitch. So that is the weight of the trailer plus anything you might have on it. I do always like to suggest, too, never a bad idea just to grab your owner's manual. That way you can make sure your Bolt can handle that much weight safely. Now I'm gonna give you a couple of measurements, and you can use these to help figure out which hitch mounted accessories to get. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's going to be about 12". And from the center of the hitch pinhole to the edge of our rear bumper, that's going to be about 3". You can use that measurement to help figure out that if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in that upright position without contacting the bumper. So at the end of the day, this is probably my favorite hitch available for the Bolt. Not only is it gonna look good, but it's also gonna be made from recycled materials as well, so that's a bonus. And having that larger opening is really gonna open up our options as far as what type of accessories we can put on the back of our Bolt. Now as far as the installation goes, you do have to remove the rear fascia here, but in all honesty, it's really not too bad. There's only a handful of fasteners and they're all easy to get to, so really shouldn't give you too many issues. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put the hitch on together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna
