This presentation discusses coding guidelines for excision and destruction of benign and malignant skin lesions, CPT® codes 11400-11471, 11600-11646, 17000-17286. The coding guidelines for each set of codes are compared and contrasted. Different scenarios are presented with coding guidelines and examples for each.
Benign lesions include neoplasms, cicatricial lesions, inflammatory lesions, congenital lesions, and cystic lesions. These lesions are treated either by excision or destruction.
Also discussed are benign premalignant lesions, benign vascular proliferative lesions and granulation tissue.
Malignant lesions include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. These may be treated using excision or destruction. Calculating margins for excision of these lesions is discussed.
