Is Highland Dress confusing? Not really. Wait...yes. Well, maybe?
We were asked what characteristics define a Dress Sporran as opposed to other types. As you probably know, the sporran is the "man purse" or "carry all" or "butt pack worn backwards" of kilted fashion.
The word is in fact Gaelic for "purse" and the item is a survival from many centuries ago when men wore such utility pouches regardless of being kilted or not. The sporran was retained in Scotland for an obvious reason - kilts have no pockets.
Sporrans come in many different forms and styles. This is one of the most FUN aspects of Highland Dress - selecting sporrans that reflect your style and attitude is definitely a thing.
The four main categories of sporran are Day, Semi-Dress, Hunting and Dress. Dress is usually meant to be worn with formal outfits as you'd don for a wedding, gala, dance or special dinner.
But what makes the Dress Sporran officially different from the other styles? The metal cantle on top? Use of a fur pelt for the front? Other accents? There is certainly historic convention. The lads brainstorm a bit.
