Cross cultural competence is having the ability to understand and effectively interact with people from different cultures. This understanding helps develop relationships that are essential for working with others, especially in the increasingly global, culturally diverse business world. The more you know about others, the more likely you are to be flexible and adaptable. You'll develop positive opinions, feelings and behaviors toward cultures outside of your own. Not only that, but you will be less likely to internalize cultural stereotypes. Keeping an open mind and aiming to understand other people helps you become more aware of why they may see things differently from you. Fully accepting other cultures, instead of simply tolerating them, gives those around you the freedom to be who they are and to see value in what they contribute. To achieve crosscultural competence, focus on self awareness and staying continuously curious about other cultures. Self awareness is an increasingly common term in business circles as its importance in all aspects of professional life becomes more and more recognized. How can we address our shortcomings and play to our strengths without an honest, accurate image of ourselves in mind? How can we demonstrate crosscultural competence if we haven't taken the time to examine our own relationship to cultural identity? There's also great professional value in the constant learner mindset. No matter where we are in our life or career, there's always more to learn, and the constant learner is eager to do just that. This applies not just to industry skills, but to cross cultural competence as well. The first step to self awareness and constant learning is honest, ongoing self reflection. Do you have any personal biases to acknowledge? Do you lack information that could otherwise help you understand other cultures? Self reflection about your own cultural influences can help you be more aware of how you can better navigate cross cultural environments and where the gaps in your own knowledge lie. For example, if you're a 75 year old Caucasian male, your experiences, knowledge and history will probably be different from that of your black female or younger coworkers. Embrace being a constant learner by acknowledging that these differences exist and that there's value in learning from them. Your attitude toward cultural differences is more than becoming aware of your reactions to different people. It's an opportunity to acknowledge if you're truly open to learning. Notice when you make assumptions without complete information and discover what value you place on cultural diversity. Of course, cultural influences can't tell you everything. Cultures shift and adapt over time. Everyone relates to their own culture differently, and our senses of self involve a lot more than cultural factors alone. It's true that we're all individuals with more that defines us than just our background. At the same time, we can also acknowledge that culture has a significant part to play in our worldviews and how we interact with others. Human beings are complicated, and it's not surprising that both things can be true at once. When it comes to such a complex skill as crosscultural competence, what can you do to stay constantly? Improving self awareness and the desire to learn are great first steps. Staying mindful of your own cultural awareness allows you to build what's called cultural intelligence the ability to adapt to the cultural expectations of your environment. Someone who uses cultural intelligence to make good decisions in a crosscultural situation is someone who has cultural agility. According to the International Journal of Human Resources Management, having cultural agility means you can comfortably and affect work in different cultural contexts. Demonstrating cultural agility and cross cultural competence is necessary in a global work environment. Just as important, though, is the fact that building rich, genuine connections with people who are different from you is a rewarding human experience. These skills allow you to do just that.
