Globalisation wasn’t the only policy to cop extraordinary criticism at Davos — another was Net Zero. The US lambasted European leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) over the continent’s green energy transition, planting renewables firmly within the context of America’s strategic rivalry with China.

Net Zero is under fire at Davos as the World Economic Forum erupts into a heated clash over renewables, globalisation and China’s growing power. US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stunned panellists by mocking wind and solar, warning Europe’s green push could leave nations “subservient” to China, which dominates battery and renewable tech production. Donald Trump doubled down, blasting windmills as “losers” and claiming countries investing heavily in wind are falling behind.

China’s Vice-Premier He Lifeng hit back, promoting Beijing’s massive renewable rollout and inviting the world to join its green supply chain. Even BlackRock CEO Larry Fink raised alarms, saying wind and solar alone can’t meet soaring power demand from AI and data centres without reliable “dispatchable” energy.

With Australia’s 2050 net zero target also in the spotlight, the global energy battle is only intensifying.
