Berlin Pride attack: Officials say vehicle ramming believed to be act of Islamist terror

Описание: German police continued to search Sunday for a suspect who drove a van into a crowd near Berlin’s Pride festival, killing at least one person and injuring dozens of others.

Authorities said Sunday the attack is believed to be an act of Islamist terror. The suspect has been identified as Abdul Ballout, a German citizen with Lebanese roots.

“We will not allow this poison of terrorism — this poison that threatens our freedom — to continue to spread throughout our society,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Sunday upon visiting the scene of the deadly attack.

“There are more of us, we are stronger, and we stand together in our country,” he continued.

The attack took place on Saturday evening near Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, away from the main Pride festival.

The attack has prompted calls for increased security as officials expressed concern about potential copycat crimes.
