Rammstein's "Deutschland" has been out for more than two years now. However, the video is still quite difficult to understand. The complicated structure as well as the major motifs are hard to understand without some basic insight into German culture and history.
This video tries to shed light on the major motifs of Rammstein's video. Recurring themes such as Tacitus's Germania, Heiner Müller's Germania, Germania as Madonna, Fire, Romans, Knights, Josephine Baker, Lenin, Nazis, Communists, V2 rockets, the Brother Conflict, West Germany, the German Democratic Republic, and Dogs will be analyzed, and their meaning in Rammstein's video as well as for Germany's evolution over the centuries from antiquity to modernity will be pointed out.
