It wasn’t until after I recorded this that I learned that longtime Procol Harum drummer BJ Thomas did not play drums on this song. In fact, he wasn’t even in the band yet when this was recorded. Recorded at Olympic Studios in London in April 1967, British session player Bill Eyden was the drummer on the session. The band completed the song in two takes and there were no overdubs done on the master take. Pretty amazing!
I tried something a bit different for this video. I found a very accurate transcription of this drum part and chose to read it as I played along. Some of the fills and subtle accents in this song are in very strange spots and I was having trouble memorizing. Once I found this transcription it made things way easier.
Such an iconic song with an incredible all around vibe. This sounds like nothing else to me from that period. Everything about this song has such a dreamlike quality; the backing track, the vocals, lyrics, and production. It’s so evocative of that psychedelic period.
