Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived a nobleman named Dioscorus who had a daughter named Barbara. Barbara was a kind and intelligent young girl who lived during the days of Emperor Maximianus, in the beginning of the third Christian century.
Dioscorus loved his daughter very much and wanted to protect her, so he built a tall tower for her to live in. From the top of the tower, Barbara could see the beautiful sky, the sun, the moon, and the stars. As she looked at the wonders of creation, she realized that there must be a wise and powerful Creator behind it all. She believed that this Creator could only be the Almighty God.
One day, a scholar named Origen heard about Barbara and her contemplation of the skies. He went to her and taught her about Christianity and the principles of the faith. Barbara was a quick learner and embraced Christianity wholeheartedly.
In the tower, Barbara had two windows in her bathroom. She ordered a third window to be opened and placed a cross above the water basin. When her father saw these changes, he asked her about the reason for them. Barbara explained that the three windows represented the Holy Trinity, and the cross symbolized the salvation brought by our Lord Jesus ChriSaint She urged her father to turn away from his wrong ways and worship the true God who created him.
But her father became angry and drew his sword, chasing after Barbara. She fled from him, and in a miraculous moment, a rock in front of her split into two halves, allowing her to pass through. Once she was safe, the rock returned to its original state. Despite her escape, her father found her hiding in a cave. He was filled with rage and took her to Marcianus, the governor.
The governor tried to persuade Barbara to give up her faith with kind words and promises, but when that didn't work, he threatened her with torture. Still, Barbara remained steadfast in her love for the Lord ChriSaint The governor then ordered her to be tortured in various ways.
In the meantime, there was a young woman named Juliana who watched Barbara being tortured. Seeing the strength and comfort the Lord provided Barbara during her ordeal, Juliana was touched and came to believe in Jesus Christ as well. The two young women received the crown of martyrdom together, and their faith remained unshaken.
After some time, both Dioscorus, Barbara's father, and the governor who had tortured her, met tragic ends. The water in the basin of Barbara's tower, where the cross had been placed, gained the power to heal those who washed with it.
The bodies of Saint Barbara and Saint Juliana were laid to rest in a church outside the city of Galatia. Later, the body of Saint Barbara was moved to a church in Cairo, which was named after her and still stands to this day.
