The Royal Australian Navy commissioned the guided missile destroyer HMAS Hobart on 23 September in Sydney in a formal ceremony steeped in tradition.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for Defence Marise Payne and Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne joined the Governor of New South Wales General David Hurley, Chief of Navy Vice Admiral Tim Barrett, as well as the family and friends of the ship’s company to welcome the newest ship to the Australian fleet.
First-of-class HMAS Hobart, is the first of three guided missile destroyer that will provide air defence for accompanying ships in addition to land forces and infrastructure in coastal areas, and for self-protection against missiles and aircraft.
The keel of Hobart was laid down on 6 September 2012 and the ship was launched on 23 May 2015.
Hobart is based on the Navantia designed F100 frigate and constructed in Australia by the Air Warfare Destroyer Alliance.
Her Aegis Combat System, incorporating the state-of-the-art phased array radar AN/SPY 1D(V), in combination with the SM-2 missile, will provide an advanced air-defence system capable of engaging enemy aircraft and missiles at ranges in excess of 150km.
The surface warfare function will include long range anti-ship missiles and a naval gun capable of firing extended range munitions in support of land forces.
Hobart will carry a helicopter for surveillance and response to support key warfare areas.
She will also conduct undersea warfare and be equipped with modern sonar systems, decoys, torpedoes and an array of effective close-in defensive weapons.
