September is Chronic Pain Awareness Month, but for many African Americans, pain is still ignored, dismissed, or under-treated — and it’s costing lives.
In this video, I share the shocking true story of an elderly Black woman who underwent major surgery, was left with over 12 inches of staples and multiple incisions, and was sent home with just 12 pain pills — and told she didn’t even need a follow-up appointment. When she later developed a severe infection, her advocate fought to get her care but was stonewalled by the doctor’s office.
This is medical bias in pain treatment — and it happens every day. In this video, we dig into:
🔎 How racial bias affects pain management for African Americans
🔎 Why Black patients are less likely to be prescribed pain medication
🔎 How universities like the University of Washington are working to change outdated stereotypes
🔎 Why speaking up, reporting neglect, and finding a patient advocate could save lives
🛑 Don’t suffer in silence. If you or someone you love is denied proper pain management, know your rights, speak up, and report it to state boards, Medicare/Medicaid, or the Joint Commission.
📢 Watch, comment, and share this video to raise awareness about chronic pain and racial bias in healthcare. Together, we can demand equal treatment for all patients.
