One hot summer afternoon I found myself in Bern, and the very next rainy morning in Basel. The real goal of my trip was actually Oeschinensee, but Bern ended up being the most convenient option for accommodation, while Basel was my first and last stop in Switzerland.
Bern was buzzing with people and tourists, yet it had this laid-back, stress-free vibe. On that scorching afternoon everyone seemed to be hanging out by the Aare river, and many were cooling off in it. From every bridge I crossed, I could spot people drifting downstream, relaxed and carefree, just letting the current carry them.
Basel, on the other hand, I saw on a Sunday morning. The streets were almost empty—I only ran into a few early joggers, flocks of pigeons, and diligent street cleaners. Even there, I noticed swimmers in the river, though the water didn’t look quite as clear as Bern’s.
I traveled between the cities by train. It was all a bit pricey, so I skipped restaurants and instead made do with whatever I could find in the supermarkets.
