Hyundai’s big boxy van just got a weekend-warrior makeover. The Staria Camper concept — shown at the Caravan, Motor und Touristik show — takes the Staria Electric’s roomy silhouette and turns it into a polished, modern micro-RV designed for true off-grid weekends. Think of it less as a rough-and-ready conversion and more like a thoughtfully engineered lifestyle vehicle that keeps EV sensibilities front and center.
From the outside, the concept keeps the Staria’s smooth, spaceship-like body but adds practical camper accoutrements: a pop-up roof that tucks away to reduce noise while driving, an integrated retractable canopy, and key utility hookups for water and electricity tucked near the tail. Hyundai even placed a 520W solar array on the pop-up roof — the idea being that, with smart energy management, the van can power fridges, lights and small appliances while staying largely self-sufficient. For travelers who want to escape crowded campsites and rely less on shore power, that’s a thoughtful move.
Inside is where the Staria Camper concept flexes its practical muscles. Second- and third-row seats fold flat to make a sleeping area for two adults, and a long counter houses a sink, storage cubbies, and a compact 36-liter refrigerator. A swiveling front passenger seat, a folding table, pegboard-style storage and soft touch finishing give the interior a boutique, camper-van feel rather than a stripped-out conversion. Hyundai also included climate control tuned for overnight use and a deployable rear table with an outdoor shower under the liftgate — little details that tell you the design team actually thought about how people will live in this vehicle.
Privacy and comfort aren’t afterthoughts: the rear glass uses electronically adjustable “smart glass” that can change transparency through a touchscreen — which doubles as thermal and acoustic insulation — and traditional curtains for extra privacy. It’s not a production announcement — Hyundai is positioning this as a concept to measure interest and gather feedback from the European market — but it’s hard to imagine that many of the practical elements wouldn’t make it into showrooms if demand proved strong. In short: Hyundai’s Staria Camper shows how automakers can take electric vans beyond commuter duty and turn them into genuine, well-engineered travel vehicles.
